"Learned Tomes"

Logo - BoyThe title of this section is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the style of many scholarly papers which were written primarily with an audience of the authors' peers in mind. You know the kind: lots of big words and psychological jargon, and lots and lots of footnotes. Nevertheless, if you are willing to wade through the sometimes mind-numbing rhetoric you will find valuable information within each of these articles.

Hatred In the Hallways, published online by Human Rights Watch, describes a study of discrimination directed against GLBT students in our nation's schools, and the steps being taken by many schools to combat it.

The website belonging to Queen's University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada includes an article titled, "Transgendered Scholars Defy Convention, Seeking to Be Heard and Seen in Academe." by Robin Wilson, originally published in The Chronicle of Higher Education, February 6, 1998. The article concerns the progress that has been made within academia in the acceptance of all variations of sexual and transgender not only among students, but within the faculty and staff of several universities throughout the continent.
The site also includes an article titled, "The Third Way." a discussion of the third gender identity option that is seldom mentioned: neither man nor woman, but somewhere in between.
In the transcript of a short address, Trans-Safety and Violence Speech, delivered by Carrie Davis, the Director of Operations for GenderPAC, she outlines many of the problems encountered by an adult trans person in everyday life. The situations she describes are the problems that could be avoided by early intervention such as that which is supported here on TYKs.
