Resources for Parents and Friends
of Transgender Children
There was a time, not too long ago, when there was no help to be found for the transgender child. Many parents met with resistance at every turn: medical, psychological, religious and social resources simply did not exist. A few parents, though, would not accept "no" for an answer.
In 1998 "Just Evelyn" (not her real name, of course) wrote a book called ...Mom I Need To Be A Girl. Her then 15-year-old "son" came to her and spoke the words which became the title of the book. Evelyn's sometimes funny, sometimes frustrated description of her battle to help her daughter blazed the trail that you are about to follow. "Just Evelyn" became an active member of Trans Youth Family Allies, or TYFA, to help other parents who found themselves in similar situations.
Trans Youth of Kansas hopes to supplement the work of TYFA by providing sources of support for parents of trans kids in Kansas. We will try to keep the information here current. Comments and suggestions are welcome.
